Awa Wahine is a social enterprise, an organisation driven to trade in order to deliver social and environmental impact. It is run by two Māori women, Ataria Sharman and Irihipeti Waretini.

We are always looking for wāhine who are keen to support us grow this business so we can have more of an impact. If this sounds like you contact Ataria at

Our vision is to:

  • Increase the readership of women’s writing

  • Encourage the publishing of women’s writing both online and through traditional publishing.

  • Support women who are creating/writing with workshops and publishing opportunities.

  • Provide a safe digital and print space for the publishing of women’s work on topics that are unlikely to be published elsewhere (due to current power structures)

  • Privilege the Māori women’s voice

We see this as manifesting as:

  • An online magazine (sustainable through a premium online membership community, advertising, paid content, shop products)

  • A monthly newsletter (sustainable through advertising and paid content)

  • A yearly, six-monthly or even quarterly printed magazine (sustainable through purchase, advertising and paid content)

  • Kanohi ki te kanohi and online workshops and courses on writing and creativity (sustainable through ticket pricing and funding/grants)

By supporting Awa Wahine, we can continue to share women’s stories.

Thank you and welcome to our community.
