New Stories

Heavy heart, in a sunken chest

Unconscious wires of unworthiness

Swimming, in pools of doubt

Planted in an infant mind

Through generational occurrences

A life of a second-class citizen;

Unknown until this day,

These heavy weights of historical pain

Certainly, and evidently taking its toll,

In the midst of suffering and sorrow,

Perpetuated generational injustices!

Visible through subsequent dysfunction and turmoil,

My heart aches a heaviness in my chest,

Shuddering shoulders fold inward in vulnerability

Crouched back, bent forward into my cocoon,

Quivering jaw rests on rough knees,

Shallow breaths are provoked,

Warm cheeks wet; from rain seeping through the broken windows

As I sob unapologetically!

Depths of built up pain churn,

Dull aches evolve into knots,

Of unworthiness, doubt, hopelessness

Slowly unveiling deep seated beliefs,

Once hidden in a veil of unconsciousness

And disbelief,

To enable a journey of finding, of discovery, of release,

A journey to beginning a new generational cycle;

New stories,

Of love, of hope, of worthiness!

Arahia Andrews

Arahia Andrews (Ngāti Porou, Te Aitanga A Māhaki, Ngā Puhi, Tainui) is a registered nurse, poet and creative. Her song writing and guitar is one of the ways that she expresses her creativity.

She also spends time sketching nature inspired images with a mixture of realism and a cartoonist but abstract touch. Sometimes she might draw Māori women with moko in contemporary clothing.

Last year, she was inspired to write her first poem after a failed relationship. She says:

“My writing has become a vessel for me to explore and better understand how my life experiences have shaped me to become the person who I am today.”
